Reduction of a severe scoliosis using ScoliBrace® and ScoliBalance® in a 14-year-old male
This 14-year-old male athlete, actively involved in Australian Rules Football (AFL) and competing nationally in athletics, was diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) at age 13 by a Physical Therapist. At the time, his curve measured 39°. Although he did not experience any pain, he was aware of the asymmetrical shape of his torso. Within a year, the curve had progressed to 49°.
Concerned about the progression, he presented to the ScoliCare clinic. He was prescribed full-time ScoliBrace® wear (up to 23 hours/day), a daily ScoliBalance® program of scoliosis-specific exercises, and home traction with a ScoliRoll® device. Sport-specific modifications were included to maintain motivation and support his athletic schedule.
Results
- In-Brace Correction and Early Progress: After one year of treatment, X-rays showed a reduction in his curve from 49° to 37°, with significant improvement in posture.
- Sustained Reduction: After 21 months of full-time bracing, the patient had reached Risser 5, indicating skeletal maturity. His curve had reduced to 31° (a 37% reduction), and brace wear was then gradually tapered.
- Long-Term Stability: At 2 years and 10 months, the patient remained stable at 31°. He now continues with ScoliBalance® exercises 2–3 times per week.
- Improved Posture and Function: The patient reports improved torso symmetry and remains pain-free. He also maintains a high level of general physical and sport activity.
NB: Results vary from case to case. Our commitment is to recommend the most appropriate treatment based on the patient’s individual case.
