87 y/o Female – Adult Degenerative Scoliosis

Treatment of a severe scoliosis using ScoliBrace® in an Older Female Patient

At 87 years old, the patient to the ScoliCare clinic presented with worsening posture, low back pain, and difficulty walking or maintaining balance. Her posture was progressively collapsing, and she struggled to stand upright without using the wall for support. X-rays revealed a 6.5 cm coronal shift, a 14 cm anterior sagittal imbalance, lumbar spine degeneration, and an angle of trunk rotation of 5° to the right – clear signs of Adult Degenerative Scoliosis.

Due to her age and the progressive nature of her symptoms, a non-surgical treatment approach was recommended. She was prescribed a custom ScoliBrace® and advised to wear it for 6–8 hours daily.

Results

  • Improved Postural Alignment: After 18 months, the patient’s posture notably improved, with coronal imbalance (left lean) reduced by 2.13 cm (32.77%) and anterior sagittal imbalance (forward lean) reduced by 10.41 cm (79.97%).
  • Enhanced Function: The patient could walk more confidently and independently, with less reliance on walls or support.
  • Reduced Pain and Falls Risk: Improvements in posture led to better balance and fewer concerns related to instability and falling.

NB: Results vary from case to case. Our commitment is to recommend the most appropriate treatment based on the patients type and severity of scoliosis.
